The SLa Team are thrilled to have been awarded the 2018 Queensland State Architecture Award – Residential Architecture for the V House. We would like to thank our amazing clients, Chris and Lorna for their faith and support in us. This has been a milestone project and achievement for the SLa Team and we would like to thank all who were involved in the crafting of the V House, especially CGH Construction and Westera Partners.

‘The V House occupies an irregular shaped block, which addresses a deep-water canal view to the south. The courtyard concept and single room depth allows for maximisation of water views and protection from the southerly winds in combination with a north facing aspect to the internal garden space. The planning strategy means there is a vivid connection to the sub-tropical setting, characterised by the casting of shadows through timber screened walls which provide a textural, animated fringe of ever changing light and shadow.

Highly refined detailing complements a clear spatial framework to reduce barriers between internal and external spaces at ground level and provide filtered experiences and privacy at the upper level. The reduced material palette of concrete and fine timber reinforces this expression of duality and conveys a poetic yet pragmatic response to the site. The richness of the detail and crafting is evident throughout as one moves through spaces bound by travertine, timber framed glazed walls and board formed concrete.

The play between transparency and permanence is evident as one transitions from semi-private to private along a sensory journey through light filled spaces and sculpted voids, all of which reinforce the delight of the experience.’
