Glenrae was the family home of the prominent Brisbane Architect Sir Walter Taylor, most notably remembered through the bridge sharing his name crossing the river at Indooroopilly. The house, a locally listed Heritage Home, has been converted into a contemporary family home that celebrates the history while providing a sustainable long-term future.

The architecture is defined by a series of pavilions and ‘curated courtyards’, mediates between old and new, light and heavy, transitioning across the various defining thresholds. A series of dramatic voids and carefully articulated skylights animate the space and allow the occupants to enjoy the existing home which is sympathetically juxtaposed with the new. A palette of stone, timber and a raft of traditional materials are balanced with the use of concrete plains that define the thresholds and accommodate the roof gardens.

This is a house with moments of delight, a reinvigorated history and modern architectural expression, all carefully sitting in a heavily landscaped setting that respectfully references the spirit of the original home.
