Hazlewood
2020
Traditional lands of the Jagera and Turrbal people
Hazlewood involved the reinvigoration and addition to a pre-war house in New Farm, inner-city Brisbane.
Occupying a corner site, the house mediates between the introverted and extroverted as it addresses the privacy needs of the inhabitants. The use of large, screened facades, brick walls and design of carefully curated apertures affords the house a lovely mix of public and private spaces, including an unexpected roof terrace accessed via a “bridge” that engages with the outdoor double height volume.
The carefully restored interior of the remnant cottage along with the carefully considered décor and landscape strategy provides a necessary, soft counterpoint to the strength of the architecture.
