Battlestar
2020
Traditional lands of the Jagera and Turrbal people
A truly amazing brief, combined with generous, supportive long-term clients allowed this idea to be realised despite its pre-war context and a challenging planning process. An ambitious aspiration to create a predominantly concrete envelope, carefully juxtaposed against the blonde timber veil and natural stone base.
The house challenges the traditional relationship to the site by elevating the living podium, along with the swimming pool, to enjoy north-easterly aspect and views into the neighbourhood. Playful forms internally, along with a series of voids and carefully located skylights serve to punctuate and soften the otherwise tough exoskeleton, further warmed by the extensive use of American oak floors and joinery.
Passers-by throughout the construction colloquially named the house the “Battlestar” as a reference to its prominent and unapologetic approach to the street, acknowledging its semi-industrial context in the foothills of Teneriffe.
