Prosperity
2023
Traditional lands of the Quandamooka people
Prosperity builds on the studios experience of homes on North Stradbroke Island, the project itself a large alteration and addition to a 70’s family home. The home incorporates both introverted and extroverted elements to the plan, a characteristic of a lot island homes.
The extroverted front yard affords public engagement, water glimpses and opportunities to soak up morning winter sun, while the central courtyard area offers respite from the sun, evening fires and a more private experience overall. The form of the house, deliberately simple with a dark “hood” to the masonry base, is highlighted by the rich use of spotted gum hardwood in a finished and weathered form. Some accents of stone pay homage to the landscape and introduce an important element of texture as a counterpoint to the brilliant white walls.
The ultimate hero of the site is the mature poinciana tree, which not only provides softness, colour and shadow, but a important sense of place.
