Straddie Shack

2019
Traditional lands of the Quandamooka people

The origin of this wonderfully simple, poetic beach house is as one of the ‘Domain’ Villas, designed by Donovan Hill and Developed by Consolidated Properties, some 15 plus years ago. The “Shack”, now the pride and joy of Shaun Lockyer and his family, is an ode to his love of the work of Donovan Hill and Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island or “Straddie” as it is often referenced). The work done to the original “Shack” includes the enclosure and detail to the central courtyard, the extension of the deck to the rear, the subsequent roof, built in seat and fencing. New lighting, finishes refresh and new décor throughout have redefined the character of the house, while equally honouring the spirit and integrity of what Donovan Hill had so exquisitely conceived in the original idea.

The “Shack” is a template for a more sustainable built outcome, occupying only 192m2 of land and only 145m2 in total built area, all while sleeping 9 people and with two outdoor spaces. The project is a great example of how less is more and in so doing, respects the desired planning outcomes (and character) of the Island. Being the quintessential weekender, consideration to the lifestyle and activities of the coastal location are first and foremost in the design. Surfboard storage, sand removal, outdoor showers, hanging and drying for wet togs, all form part of the architectural outcome and the tangible character of the home. Outdoor spaces that promote occupation throughout the year, celebrate the potential of sub-tropical living and create a sense of space the belies the frugal footprint of the home. The existence of Crown land to the rear provides a green belt of borrowed space where the need of privacy, sanctuary, connection to land and kangaroos all come together.
