Traditional lands of the Turrbal and Jagera people
Binkenba (an Aboriginal word meaning place of the land tortoise, commonly known as New Farm) is a home placed on the edge of the New Farm Park, enjoying an acreage lifestyle in the middle of the city. The design incorporated the complete conversion of a pre-existing Cutters Landing home into a contemporary family home, centered around gathering and its connection to the Park. A sequence of strategic voids and skylights, liberate the floor plan and bring Northern light deep into the indoor and outdoor spaces.
A restrained and tactile palette of materials create a mixture of character and warmth, punctuated by timber features and moments of black to frame openings and thresholds. The Northern yard provides a landscaped sanctuary away from the frenzy of the Park, accommodating a lap pool. All of which are book-ended by a theatrical concrete feature, accessed from the first floor. A number of fireplaces provide a lovely winter character to the home and allow for its occupation to be enjoyed year round.
