Traditional lands of the Jagera and Turrbal people

A rare opportunity to recalibrate a substantial pre-war home, spread across three blocks in inner-city Teneriffe. The home balances the retention of the historic fabric with a contemporary extension that affords the benefits of modern day living to the house. The planning hierarchically prioritises the garden, which occupies a courtyard like format on the southwestern side of the corner block, which also enjoys panoramic city views.

The “L” shaped plan contextually responds to the two adjacent streets while offering a traditional response to the one, with a hybrid response to the other. The plan format creates a largely single depth room layout which is optimal in the subtropical context of this home, flooding it with light and allowing occupants to calibrate their environment.

A blonde, restrained and warm palette of materials honours the historic narrative, juxtaposed by the concrete and stone, which both anchor the house and provide the framework for the biophylic planting throughout (and on) the house.
