The Barn
2024
Traditional lands of the Arakwal, Minjungbal, and Widjabul people
Nestled in the rolling hills of the Byron Bay Hinterland, The Barn draws from its agrarian surroundings to create a place of calm, warmth, and connection to the land. A restrained palette of greying timber, recycled brick, and olive-toned steel allows the building to quietly settle into the landscape over time.
The plan follows a simple “H” form, creating pavilion-like wings that are one room deep. This allows natural light and air to move freely through the home, with every space opening to the garden or landscape. Facing east, the primary elevation captures long views and morning sun, moderated by operable timber screens that respond to seasonal conditions.
The pitched timber-clad roof defines two elevated volumes with a quiet, Nordic quality - light-filled, warm, and tactile. Set on a gently sloping site, the single-level layout maintains close connection to the garden, pool, and tennis court, while lifting slightly at the eastern edge to survey the full 50-acre property.
At the heart of the home, a central courtyard brings landscape and light into the interior, enriching even the most tucked-away spaces like the sunken games room. Inside, the palette is soft and blonde. Oak finishes add warmth and texture, creating a calm, understated interior that complements the natural setting.
